GMB Union Slams 'Absolute Disgrace' Facilities for Taxi Drivers at Birmingham Airport

The GMB Union has labelled facilities at Birmingham Airport an "absolute disgrace," calling on airport bosses to urgently improve conditions for private hire drivers.

Representing thousands of drivers, the union claimed that those waiting to pick up passengers are forced to endure "unacceptable" conditions, including "filthy" bathrooms.

According to the GMB, private hire drivers are required to pay for every hour they spend waiting for fares at the airport. Despite these costs, a recent survey of members highlighted several critical failures:

  • Sanitation: Bathroom facilities described as "caked in grime and waste."

  • Infrastructure: A total lack of dedicated waiting areas, leaving drivers with no choice but to wait in a paid-for multi-storey car park.

  • System Failures: Faulty automatic payment systems resulting in "eye-watering" fines, some reaching as high as £500.

  • Religious Neglect: A lack of appropriate spaces for drivers observing Ramadan, forcing them to pray on the car park floor.

The report follows a high-profile incident in February, where an NCP parking error at the airport left driver Ian Cook with an incorrect bill of nearly £2,000. The sum was automatically deducted from his bank account and was not returned for six days.

"Dire Conditions"

GMB Organiser Kate Gorton hit out at the airport's management, noting that private hire taxis are an "essential component" of any modern transport hub.

“It is an absolute disgrace that the men and women driving them are being asked to endure such dire conditions at Birmingham Airport," Gorton said. "This is one of the UK’s busiest airports, yet they seem totally unable to provide even the most basic waiting areas."

She specifically highlighted the impact on Muslim drivers: “The facilities are so basic that this Ramadan, we have had complaints from drivers having to observe their prayers on the cold, wet, and dirty floor of a car park. If other UK airports can offer basic facilities, why are our members in Birmingham being asked to use filthy bathrooms and pay for the privilege?”

The GMB is now calling on all private hire drivers in the region to join their campaign to demand the services and dignity they deserve.
